COROS Workout Builder: Intervals, Limits, Workarounds

If you own a COROS PACE, APEX, or VERTIX, you already know the watch can run a structured session with alerts, targets, and stage-by-stage guidance. Getting a session onto the watch in the first place is the part that trips people up. The builder works, but it has a specific set of steps, a specific set of menus, and a specific set of things it simply won’t do.

This is a practical walkthrough of how to build an interval workout in the COROS app and in COROS Training Hub, how to get it onto the watch, and where self-coached runners, cyclists, and triathletes tend to hit a wall. Toward the end, there’s a section on TextFit, the app we build, and what it can and can’t fix here.

How to build a structured workout in the COROS app

The COROS phone app is the fastest way to build a one-off interval session.

  1. Open the app and go to Profile > Workout Library, then tap Create.
  2. Name the workout and add a description. For pool swims, pick the pool length first.
  3. Add exercises. Running and biking workouts give you five block types: Warm Up, Training, Rest, Cool Down, and Interval. Selecting Interval builds an alternating work/rest pattern automatically.
  4. Tap any exercise to set its target and intensity. Target options are Distance, Time, Training Load, or Open. Intensity options depend on sport but typically include % max heart rate, % heart rate reserve, % threshold heart rate, plain heart rate, pace, speed, cadence, and power (including % FTP for cycling).
  5. To build a repeated set, drag one exercise on top of another to group them, then use the + button to set how many times the group repeats.
  6. Tap and hold any exercise to drag it into a new position within the workout. Swipe left on an exercise to delete or duplicate it.
  7. Tap Save, then Send to Device to push it to your watch over Bluetooth.

The watch stores up to 100 workouts locally, so this isn’t a one-in-one-out situation unless your library is already large.

Building the same workout in COROS Training Hub (Web)

COROS Training Hub, at t.coros.com, mirrors the app’s builder but is easier to use with a mouse and keyboard, especially for longer sessions or full weeks of training.

To create a workout: choose the sport (Run, Bike, Swim, or Strength), name it, then set target, intensity, and repeats for each step the same way you would in the app. The drag-and-drop grouping for sets works the same as on mobile.

Training Hub’s real advantage is building multi-week plans. You save individual workouts to your library first, then drag or copy them onto specific calendar dates to assemble a plan. Training Hub supports copying a single workout or an entire week at once, and you can label weeks as Base, Peak, Preparation, Progress, Race, or Transition to keep the structure readable. Once a workout or plan is on the calendar in Training Hub, it shows up in the COROS app and can be synced down to the watch from there.

Step types, targets, and repeats COROS supports

Across both the app and Training Hub, a workout is built from a small set of block types: Warm Up, Training, Rest, Cool Down, and (for run/bike) Interval. Each block gets one fixed target — distance, time, training load, or open — and one intensity setting drawn from your pace, heart rate, or power zones.

Repeats work by nesting: group two or more blocks into a set, then set a repeat count on the group. That covers the vast majority of interval sessions, including things like pyramid and ladder intervals built as several short groups back to back.

One thing worth flagging clearly: COROS doesn’t have a ramp or progression block type. Every step holds a single, fixed target for its whole duration — there’s no way to tell a step to build from one pace or power to another over time. If you want a session that ramps, you have to approximate it by stacking several short fixed-target steps at increasing intensities, which is a workaround, not a real ramp.

During the activity, the watch shows an alert before each stage with the upcoming target, and you can preview any stage with the “View” option before you start. You can also toggle Auto Advance to move between stages automatically, or advance manually with the back/lap button.

Getting the workout onto your watch: library vs. calendar

There are two ways a workout ends up on your watch, and they behave differently.

Unscheduled workouts — anything saved to your library without a date — show up in the watch’s Workouts menu inside the relevant activity mode (Run, Bike, and so on). You can pick from this list and start any of them whenever you want.

Scheduled workouts — anything assigned to a calendar date, whether you placed it there manually or it’s part of a training plan — only appear on their assigned day. Open the matching activity mode on that day and the watch will prompt you to follow today’s scheduled workout.

Either way, the transfer itself happens through Send to Device in the app, or by syncing your watch after building or editing in Training Hub.

Importing workouts from TrainingPeaks, Final Surge, Runna, and others

If you’re coached or already run your training through another platform, you likely don’t need to rebuild workouts in COROS by hand.

  • TrainingPeaks: connect it under Profile > Settings > 3rd Party Apps > Data Sync in the COROS app. The link is two-way — TrainingPeaks workouts and plans come into COROS, and your completed COROS activities, resting heart rate, HRV, and sleep data go back to TrainingPeaks.
  • Final Surge: has a direct COROS integration. You can push a single planned workout manually, or turn on Auto-Sync so Final Surge pushes your next four days of planned structured workouts to COROS every night. Completed COROS activities sync back to Final Surge automatically.
  • Runna: connect your COROS account in the Runna app under Connected Apps and Watches. Runna Premium pushes your next two full weeks of unskipped, uncompleted workouts to the COROS app every Monday; editing your Runna plan updates them automatically. From there you sync the calendar to your watch from the COROS app.
  • .fit and .tcx files: Training Hub can import completed activity files directly (20 KB to 200 MB), and can export your COROS activities as .fit or .tcx for use elsewhere. This is for activity history, not for building structured workouts.

What the COROS workout builder can’t do

Once you’ve used the builder for a few weeks, the gaps become familiar. A few come up consistently among self-coached athletes comparing notes online:

  • No ramp blocks. As above, every step is a fixed target for its duration. If your plan calls for a genuine ramp — say, power building steadily over 10 minutes — you’re stacking short steps to fake the shape, not setting one.
  • Auto lap with warm-up and cool-down attached. When a workout includes warm-up and cool-down blocks around the main set, some athletes find auto-lap doesn’t split cleanly inside the main set the way it does when the workout is just the intervals alone.
  • No incline field, no adjustable speed field, and no next-interval preview on the main data screen mid-rep — you can check the upcoming stage through the View option, but there’s no persistent look-ahead the way some treadmill or bike-computer builders show.
  • Limited recovery flexibility. Recovery is just another Rest or Open block with a target — no separate recovery typology (jog vs. walk vs. float), and no way to end recovery early on heart-rate recovery beyond the pool-swim HR Recovery target type.
  • No post-activity interval editing. Once a session is recorded, you can’t go back and re-slice or relabel intervals if the watch’s laps didn’t line up with what you actually did.
  • HR zones are global, not per-step. You can edit zones under Profile > Settings > Heart Rate Zone, switching between max-HR and heart-rate-reserve models. But the builder only lets you assign a step to one of those saved zones — you can’t set a one-off custom HR range for a single interval. Dial in your zones with a heart rate zones calculator before you build the workout, not after.
  • Reordering saved workouts. You can drag steps into a new order inside a workout, but once you have a library of saved workouts, several athletes note there’s no way to drag the list itself into a different order.

None of these make the builder unusable. They mean interval sessions with any nuance — ramps, custom recovery, or race-specific pacing — take more manual assembly than they would on a platform built around structured training first.

Can intervals.icu send planned workouts to a COROS watch?

Yes, this works today, and it’s worth knowing because it changes how you’d route a workout onto COROS if you’re building it somewhere other than the COROS app.

Intervals.icu has supported pushing planned workouts to COROS since 2023. Once you connect your COROS account under intervals.icu’s integrations and turn on the “Upload planned workouts” setting, intervals.icu pushes roughly a week of planned sessions to COROS as a single plan. You may need to manually add the “Intervals.icu Training Plan” to your calendar inside the COROS app the first time before the sessions show up. Sync issues do get reported on the intervals.icu forum from time to time — usually traced to pace or power zones not being fully set up on the intervals.icu side, or connection filters blocking the transfer — but COROS moderators there describe the connection as working for large numbers of users day to day.

What TextFit can and can’t do here

TextFit is an iOS app for writing a workout in plain language and turning it into a structured session — it’s what we build. You type something like “warmup 15min easy, 5x3min hard with 2min recovery, 10min cooldown,” in whatever language you think in, and the AI structures it into steps, targets, and repeats. What TextFit doesn’t do: it doesn’t run workouts on your watch, and it doesn’t fix a broken COROS sync. Once your workout is on intervals.icu, whether it lands on your COROS watch depends on your COROS-intervals.icu connection and zone settings, the same as it would for any workout built directly in intervals.icu. TextFit also doesn’t add ramp blocks, custom per-interval HR ranges, or any of the other builder gaps above — those live entirely inside COROS’s own editor and syncing pipeline, not in the text you write.
