Comparison
Runna vs Garmin Coach
One is a paid running app with coach-designed plans and a voice in your ear. The other is free and built into Garmin Connect. Here is how Runna and Garmin Coach differ on price, plans, watches and strength, who should pick which, and a third option for athletes who train for more than running.
Prices and features checked on on each app’s own website. We make TextFit, one of the apps on this page.
In short: pick Garmin Coach if you run with a Garmin and want a free plan that adjusts to your recovery. Pick Runna if you want a fuller running app with audio cues and a big plan library, or you don’t wear a Garmin, and $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year is fine. If you also ride, swim or lift, or want to change the plan by telling a coach, look at the third option below.

Price: $119.99 a year vs free
Runna costs $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year in the US after a 7-day free trial; Strava sells a Strava + Runna plan for $149.99 a year. Garmin Coach is free in Garmin Connect (Garmin Connect+ adds coaching videos), so its real price is the Garmin you already bought. Over an 18-week marathon build: about $100 for Runna monthly, or $119.99 for a year, against $0.
Plans: what you get and how they change
Runna builds a plan around your distance or race date, experience and schedule. Its coaches include Olympians such as head coach Steph Kessell, and its library runs from new-to-running and post-injury plans to Elite multi-stage ultras.
Garmin Coach has “adaptive and prebuilt plans”: Garmin Run Coach personalizes workouts day to day from your performance and health metrics, or you follow Jeff Galloway, Greg McMillan or Amy Parkerson-Mitchell. Select plans adjust when you miss a workout or sleep poorly and explain why a workout was suggested.
Watches, strength and other sports
Garmin Coach runs on Garmin devices, with plans that vary by model. Runna lists Apple Watch, Garmin, COROS, Fitbit and Suunto and syncs to Strava. Runna adds a personalized strength plan for runners; Garmin Run Coach adds supplemental strength workouts, and Garmin has separate strength, cycling and triathlon plans.
During the run
Runna gives live audio cues on running workouts through your phone, its Apple Watch app, Garmin or Suunto. Garmin Coach workouts run as structured workouts with targets on the screen.
Runna or Garmin Coach: who should pick which
Pick Runna if you want a voice telling you when to start the next rep, you use Apple Watch, COROS, Fitbit or Suunto or switch devices, you want a large library of running plans, or you’re on Android or already pay for Strava.
Pick Garmin Coach if you run with a Garmin and want a plan that costs nothing, reacts to your sleep and recovery, or comes from a named coach such as Jeff Galloway or Greg McMillan.
The third option: TextFit
TextFit is our app. It plans running, cycling, swimming and strength in one week, with at most two hard days (three above eight sessions), never back to back. You change the plan in the coach chat (“Move my long run to Sunday, I’m travelling”) and every change has Undo. The next 7 days go to Garmin Connect or Apple Watch automatically, and HRV, resting heart rate and sleep come back; on a 🟡 or 🔴 day, Ease today lightens or clears the plan. 14 days free, then $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year.
