Indoor training without the subscription
How to use a smart trainer without Zwift
Yes, your Wahoo KICKR, Zwift Cog or any smart trainer can run structured ERG workouts without a $20-a-month subscription. You need a free planning account, the Garmin or Wahoo you already own, and a way to write the workouts. Here is the whole stack.
Can you use a smart trainer without Zwift?
Yes. A smart trainer is just a resistance unit that listens for a power target over ANT+ FE-C or Bluetooth. Zwift is one thing that can send those targets. So can a Garmin Edge, a Wahoo ELEMNT, most recent Garmin multisport watches, and several free or cheaper apps. If what you want is intervals, not a virtual world, you do not need Zwift at all.
What you need
-
A smart trainer
Any controllable trainer: Wahoo KICKR and KICKR Core, Tacx, Elite, Saris, Zwift Hub. If it works in ERG mode in Zwift, it works in ERG mode elsewhere.
-
Something to control it
Garmin Edge bike computers follow workouts from your Garmin Connect calendar and set the trainer's resistance. Wahoo ELEMNT head units do the same from Planned Workouts. Garmin watches with an Indoor Trainer activity (Fenix 6, 7 and 8, Forerunner 745, 945 and later multisport models, MARQ, tactix) can too. No head unit? The free Wahoo app runs planned workouts on a KICKR, and MyWhoosh is a free riding app with ERG.
-
Somewhere to plan the workouts
intervals.icu is free and connects to Garmin Connect, Wahoo and Zwift. Put a workout on its calendar and it appears on your Edge, ELEMNT, watch or Wahoo app on the day. This is the piece most people do not know exists.
Does the Zwift Cog work without Zwift?
For workouts, yes. The Cog replaces your cassette with a single sprocket and relies on the trainer to change resistance. In ERG mode that is exactly what happens: the workout sets the watts, the trainer adjusts, you pedal. Every controller above works with a Cog-equipped KICKR Core in ERG.
What you lose outside Zwift is virtual shifting. Free riding or simulated climbs in another app feel like a single-speed bike. If you bought a KICKR Core with the Zwift Cog and Click, then decided Zwift is not for you, structured training is the one thing that still works perfectly.
What is ERG mode?
ERG mode is the trainer holding a power target no matter how fast you pedal or which gear you are in. Pedal faster and resistance drops; pedal slower and it rises. It is what makes structured intervals honest indoors, and it is a trainer feature, not a Zwift feature. The full explanation, including how to avoid the "spiral of death", is in ERG mode explained.
Setup, step by step
-
Create a free intervals.icu account
Go to intervals.icu, sign up, then open Settings and connect Garmin Connect (for an Edge or watch) or your Wahoo account (for an ELEMNT or the Wahoo app). Tick the option to upload planned workouts. intervals.icu sends the next seven days of your plan to Wahoo and the calendar entries to Garmin.
-
Put a workout on the calendar
Use the intervals.icu workout builder, or type the session in TextFit and let it upload to intervals.icu for you. Either way the workout needs power targets as a percentage of FTP. No FTP yet? Do a 20-minute FTP test first.
-
Open it on your controller
Garmin Edge: Training, then Workouts, pick today's session. Wahoo ELEMNT: Planned Workouts, pick the session. Garmin watch: start the Indoor Bike Trainer activity, choose Follow Workout. Wahoo app: the session sits under My plan on the Home tab.
-
Pair the trainer and ride
Pair the trainer as a sensor once (ANT+ FE-C on Garmin, Bluetooth or ANT+ on Wahoo). Start the workout and the controller switches the trainer into ERG mode. Use the small chainring and a middle cog for a smoother flywheel, and keep the cadence steady on the hard reps.
What it costs
| Piece | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Zwift membership | $19.99/month or $199.99/year | US pricing. Builder, ERG control and virtual world in one. |
| intervals.icu | Free | Optional supporter subscription. Planning, calendar, device sync. |
| Garmin Edge / Wahoo ELEMNT / Garmin watch | $0 | You already own it. Wahoo app is free on a KICKR. |
| TextFit | Free, or $3.99/month, $39.99/year for Pro | Optional. Type the workout instead of clicking blocks. Free tier is 10 workouts a month. |
The whole stack, with TextFit Pro, is under one fifth of a Zwift membership. Without TextFit it is free.
What you give up
- No virtual world, no group rides, no races. The ride is you, the numbers, and whatever is on the TV.
- No virtual shifting with a Zwift Cog outside Zwift. ERG only.
- Trainer control quality depends on the head unit or watch. Garmin Edge and Wahoo ELEMNT are solid. Some older watches follow the workout but do not set resistance; check the manual for "Indoor Trainer".
- Which devices receive planned workouts is decided by intervals.icu's integrations, not by TextFit.
Where TextFit fits
The part of this stack that still costs time is writing the workouts. intervals.icu's builder works, but it is blocks and percentages. TextFit is the typing layer. Write the session the way you would text it to a training partner, in any language, and it becomes a structured workout with power targets, uploaded to intervals.icu and on your Edge, ELEMNT or watch before you have changed into bib shorts.
Honest limits: TextFit does not control the trainer or run the workout. It writes the workout and hands it to intervals.icu. If a device is not on intervals.icu's list, TextFit cannot reach it either.
Type the workout. Ride it on the trainer you own.
Free to start: 10 workouts a month, no account. Pro is $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year, less than one month of Zwift.
Free to start. No account, no sign-up. Works in any language.

Questions people ask
Can you use a Wahoo KICKR without Zwift?
Yes. A KICKR is a standard smart trainer that speaks ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth FTMS. Any head unit or app that supports those, including a Garmin Edge, a Wahoo ELEMNT or the free Wahoo app, can control it in ERG mode. Zwift is one option, not a requirement.
Does the Zwift Cog work without a Zwift subscription?
For structured workouts, yes. In ERG mode the trainer sets the resistance, so the single cog is all you need. Outside Zwift you lose virtual shifting, so free riding or simulated routes in other apps feel like a single-speed bike.
Can a Garmin watch control a smart trainer?
Many can. Fenix 6, 7 and 8, Forerunner 745 and 945 and later multisport Forerunners, MARQ and tactix models have an Indoor Trainer option that follows a workout and sets resistance. Look for "Using an Indoor Trainer" in your watch manual.
Is intervals.icu free?
Yes. intervals.icu is free to use, with an optional supporter subscription. It connects to Garmin Connect, Wahoo, Zwift and others and pushes your planned workouts to them.
Do I need Zwift for ERG mode?
No. ERG mode is a trainer feature, not a Zwift feature. Whatever controls the trainer, a bike computer, watch or app, can hold a power target.
